How to Read the Bible for Beginners: Where to Start & How to Understand It

Published by Lumina Editorial • 7 min read

Opening a library of 66 books written over a 1,500-year span can feel daunting. Many people start on page one in Genesis, get stuck in the detailed Levitical law codes, and abandon reading altogether. Understanding how the Bible is structured changes your entire reading experience.

1. Don't Start on Page One (Genesis)

Unlike a standard novel, the Bible is a curated library. For beginners, the best starting point is the Gospel of John or Mark in the New Testament. These books offer a direct account of the life, teachings, and compassion of Jesus Christ before you dive into Old Testament historical narratives.

2. Pick the Right Translation

Modern English translations fall along a spectrum between literal word-for-word accuracy and thought-for-thought clarity. For daily reflection, readable public-domain texts like the World English Bible (WEB) or modern equivalents like the ESV and NIV balance clarity with textual precision.

3. Use the SOAP Method for Reflection

Instead of reading dozens of chapters quickly, focus on depth over speed using four simple steps:

  • S — Scripture: Write down 1-2 verses that capture your attention.
  • O — Observation: What stands out about the author's message or context?
  • A — Application: How does this principle apply to your personal life today?
  • P — Prayer: Write a brief request for guidance based on the verse.
