How to Pray When You Don't Know What to Say

Published by Lumina Editorial • 5 min read

Many people assume prayer requires eloquent speech, religious vocabulary, or formal postures. In reality, scripture depicts prayer simply as honest conversation and quiet presence.

The ACTS Prayer Framework

When your mind feels scattered, using a simple four-part acronym helps structure your thoughts:

  • A — Adoration: Pause and acknowledge one aspect of creation or beauty you appreciate.
  • C — Confession: Be honest about a mistake, frustration, or negative attitude you carried today.
  • T — Thanksgiving: Express gratitude for one simple blessing (health, shelter, a friend).
  • S — Supplication: State your personal needs or requests for loved ones plainly.

Breath Prayers for Busy Moments

In times of acute stress, long prayers aren't necessary. Ancient Christians used short "breath prayers"—one phrase prayed on an inhale, and one on an exhale (e.g., Inhale: "When I am afraid," Exhale: "I put my trust in you.").
